Furnace Check Ups Increase Efficiency and Reduce Utility Costs


Hi everybody, welcome back to the planet, I’m Jackee and I’m here with Mark who is the owner of Air & Heat Comfort here in Denver. We are here at the lab at Sollivan School of Technology and design and are borrowing some of their furnaces to demonstrate some of the tips that Mark is gonna be sharing with you about heating and cooling. Now with energy costs going through the roof how are we gonna manage to keep our utility cost down, while improving efficiency with our heating and cooling systems. The biggest thing as a homeowner, that you can do, is to get a tune-up on your HVAC Equipment. A good quality tune up, done on your Denver furnace and air conditioner once a year, or anywhere, will save you money in utility costs and in repairs on your equipment.

The utility company tells us that it will more than pay for itself in energy savings, if it’s done properly and it’s done every year, OK? What are some other the issues that you see that the homeowner can actually do to help increase the efficiency and reduce your heating and cooling bills? Stay on top of your filter changes. make sure that you’re changing that filter on the recommended intervals. If the filter gets dirty, gets plugged up, it makes the equipment work harder and that just burns more utilities. Right! you can also use a programmable thermostat. They are readily available today and used properly, again The utility company’s number, 17 percent savings on your energy bill. So that’s a significant number .

Mark shared a statistic with me that kind of blew my mind because it was so vividly imaginable: leakage from windows. Well, not just windows but all the openings in the house and the Building Performance Institute has done a tremendous amount of study on this and it’s called stack affect and what they’ve determined is that in houses that were built before nineteen ninety, typically we have at least a two-foot by two foot hole through the ceiling. Now I mean the equivalent thereof of a 2 foot by 2 foot hole. What that is, it’s all a little places that wires have been run through the wall. Plumbing has been run through the walls up into the attic and if it all pulls air from the bottom of the house, just takes it up into the attic and you’re heating and your cooling the outdoors. Wow, that again is a very vivid picture in my mind. of heating energy that’s going up in the air, so seal up your house!

Is there anything else that we want to wrap up with? If you’re looking at new equipment, make sure that it’s properly sized. Too big is as bad as too small . Too small won’t adequately heat or cool your house but too big will not do a good job of heating and cooling either. It’ll run short cycles and the equipment will never get to its efficiency level also in the wintertime, which is where we are now, you can look at installing a humidifier by having the air moist it makes it feel warmer even though the temperature may be a little bit lower. Typically we find we install a humidifier and they can be comfortable about 2 degrees cooler than what they were at before the humidifiers. So that the comfort factor is there for you.
